Put your skills to the test

Check out the results of the 2008 MPG Challenge!

The 2008 Hybridfest MPG Challenge will be held Friday, July 18; check-in begins at noon.  Location: Olin Park (1156 Olin Turville Dr. Madison, WI 53715).  Awards will be presented at approximately 7:30 p.m., as part of the Friday evening Ice Cream Social for Hybridfest members.

Details

Drivers check-in at noon, drivers meeting at 12:30 p.m. The first car will head out on to the route (~30 miles on an open course) at 1 p.m. and the last car will return by 5:15 p.m.

To rule out excessively slow driving (or speeding), maximum and minimum course time limits will be enforced. Drivers who stay at or near the posted speed limits will return well within these time limits. A maximum/minimum odometer distance reading will also be enforced, to ensure the course was followed.

Fuel economy will be recorded by the vehicle's factory equipment, unless another method is chosen by the Hybridfest MPG Challenge Committee. MPG Challenge officials do not object to a Can-View device or Scan-Gauge device or other similar device being installed in the car as long as the OBDII port is accessible to officials for affixing monitoring equipment for the duration of the route. To calculate fuel efficiency, MPG Challenge officials reserve the right to use the Can-View device or Scan-Gauge device or other similar device, or the vehicle's stock display.

Eight Divisions

Drivers only compete against other vehicles within their division.

The goal: Achieve the best percentage over the EPA's estimates for your vehicle, as compared to other cars within your division (see Example below).

Division-winning drivers agree to have their vehicle on display Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of the Hybridfest Hybrid Owners Showcase or other events, if asked to do so.

Division 1
  • Honda Insight (all)
Division 2
  • Toyota Prius (2004-present)
Division 3
  • Honda Civic Hybrid (all)
  • Toyota Prius (2000-2003)
Division 4
  • Honda Accord Hybrid
  • Lexus GS 450h
  • Lexus LS 600h L
  • Nissan Altima Hybrid
  • Toyota Camry Hybrid
Division 5
  • Chevy Malibu Hybrid
  • Ford Escape Hybrid
  • Lexus RX 400h
  • Mazda Tribute Hybrid
  • Mercury Mariner Hybrid
  • Saturn Aura Hybrid
  • Saturn VUE Green Line Hybrid
  • Toyota Highlander Hybrid
Division 6
  • Chevy Silverado Hybrid
  • Chevy Tahoe Hybrid
  • GMC Yukon Hybrid
Division 7
  • Modified hybrids (example, plug-in hybrids, non-standard electric mode hybrids, etc)
Division 8
  • Non-hybrid vehicles including diesel, E-85, etc.

Here's an example.  In Division 3, if an '04 Civic Hybrid driver scores 108% over the EPA mpg estimate for an '04 Civic Hybrid, but an '01 Prius scores 110% over EPA for an '01 Prius, the Prius would win first place for that division.
